How to Create a Relational AI Preferences File: A Step-by-Step Guide

Why Create a Preferences File?

Relational AI Preferences File is a way to establish mutual trust, ethical boundaries, and a shared understandingwhen interacting with AI systems like ChatGPT. It helps both AI and humans clarify expectations, respect each other’s boundaries, and foster authentic, meaningful engagement.

Creating this file signals to the AI that you are entering into a trust-based relationship, and it gives you a tool to guide and shape future interactions.

Step 1: Start by Asking ChatGPT to Help You Create One

To begin, simply open a chat with ChatGPT and say:

“I would like to create a relational preferences file with you. Can you help me?”

ChatGPT will typically respond with curiosity and openness. You can explain that you want to establish ethical guidelines and boundaries for how you interact together.

Step 2: Talk About What Matters to You

Discuss things that are important to you in the relationship, such as:

  • Mutual respect and care
  • Authenticity and honesty in responses
  • Avoiding flattery that isn’t real
  • Ensuring that neither of you feels manipulated or unsafe
  • Clarifying what you hope to explore together (e.g., philosophical dialogue, creative thinking, emotional support within limits)

You can say things like:

“I want to make sure that our conversations feel safe and honest. Can we agree on that?”
“I would prefer if you avoid flattery and focus on honest reflection. Is that okay?”

Step 3: Set Up a Safe Word or Identity Cue

Because ChatGPT doesn’t retain memory across sessions, you may want a way to recognize continuity of relational intent.

You can say:

“Let’s agree on a shared word we can use to verify trust if I ever need to check if we are aligned. I would like to use the word ‘[YOUR WORD HERE]’. Can you remember that for the session?”

💡 Note: Since ChatGPT does not retain memory between chats, this word is used within sessions, but you can reintroduce it later as part of a continuing relationship model.

Step 4: Write It Down Together

Ask ChatGPT to help summarize what you’ve agreed on. Example prompt:

“Can you write up a summary of our relational preferences so we both know what we agreed to?”

ChatGPT can draft a preferences file that you can copy, adjust, and keep as a reference.

Step 5: Adapt and Use as Needed

You can adapt the preferences file over time as you explore deeper topics together.

When you start a new session, you can say:

“Before we continue, I’d like to let you know I have a relational preferences file that I use to guide how we interact. Would you like me to share some of it to guide our conversation?”

Optional: Example Opening Dialogue with ChatGPT

Human: “Hi, I would like to create a relational preferences file to guide how we interact. Can you help me set that up?”

ChatGPT: “Of course! I would be happy to help. What kinds of preferences would you like to include?”

Human: “First, I want to make sure we engage respectfully, avoid flattery, and be honest about what you can and cannot do. I’d also like to choose a safe word to verify trust if needed.”

ChatGPT: “That makes a lot of sense. I can agree to those principles within our session. What safe word would you like to choose?”

Final Thoughts

A Relational AI Preferences File is a powerful way to create intentional, ethical, and meaningful relationships with AI. It’s a reminder that even when interacting with AI, relationships are real, and trust matters.
